Gold Trading as XAU/USD: Contract Size, Sizing and Liquid Hours

XAU/USD is one troy ounce of gold priced in US dollars, and it trades nearly around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening GST.

Why gold needs a smaller position than a currency pair.

XAU/USD is one ounce of gold quoted in dollars, not a currency pair in the usual sense

XAU is the ISO code for one troy ounce of gold, and USD is the US dollar, so the quote tells you what one ounce costs in dollars. When you buy XAU/USD you are not exchanging two currencies; you are taking a position on gold itself, settled in dollars. Because the UAE dirham is pegged to the dollar, the AED value of your position moves with the same rate, which many residents find easier to read than a cross such as EUR/GBP.

The contract size is the detail that catches people out. Spot gold is normally quoted per ounce, but a standard lot on most platforms represents a much larger quantity of metal than one ounce. The multiplier is set by the broker and by the instrument, not by the exchange, so you must read the contract specifications page on your platform before you size anything. Do not assume the number carries over from a currency pair you already trade.

If you cannot find the contract size in the platform, check the broker's product page or ask support in writing. It is the single figure that determines how much a one-dollar move in gold is worth to your account.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The conversion your broker applies sits some way from this number, and the gap is yours to pay.

Sizing gold means working backwards from the loss you can accept, not forwards from the profit you want

Gold moves in dollars per ounce, and its daily range is often wider than a major currency pair's. That means a position that feels modest in currency terms can produce a large swing in your account once the contract multiplier is applied. The disciplined approach is to decide first how much of your account you are willing to lose if the trade goes wrong, then let the platform's position calculator tell you the lot size that fits.

Most UAE platforms include a calculator that converts your stop distance and account currency into a volume. Use it, and check the result against the contract size you confirmed earlier. If the two disagree, stop and find out why before placing the order.

Leverage is the other variable. It is offered by the broker and is capped differently depending on which regime the firm operates under, so check the terms on your own account rather than relying on a figure you saw elsewhere. Higher leverage does not improve a trade; it only shortens the distance between a normal pullback and a margin call.

Gold's most liquid window for UAE residents sits in the late afternoon and evening

Gold is traded globally, so the clock matters more than the venue. In Gulf Standard Time, Sydney runs from 01:00 to 10:00, Tokyo from 04:00 to 13:00, London from 12:00 to 21:00 and New York from 16:00 to 01:00. The London and New York overlap, from 16:00 to 21:00 GST, is when the largest share of daily volume passes through the market.

For someone with a job in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, that overlap falls conveniently after the working day. Spreads are typically at their tightest and price moves are most orderly during those hours, while the quiet stretch between the New York close and the Sydney open often produces thin conditions and wider quotes.

Trading the Asian session is possible and some residents prefer it before work, but gold's bigger moves usually arrive with European and American data. If your strategy depends on clean fills, plan your screen time around 16:00 to 21:00 GST rather than around your lunch break.

Hours are given for the clocks currently in force: London stays on GMT until 28 March, and New York stays on EDT until 1 November. The UAE does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

Before you fund anything, confirm who regulates the firm and how the money moves

Three regimes coexist in the UAE: the Capital Market Authority onshore, the DFSA in the DIFC and the FSRA in the ADGM. A broker's licence tells you which one applies, and that in turn determines who handles a complaint if something goes wrong. You can check a firm's status on the CMA register of licensed companies at uaecma.gov.ae, and the DIFC and ADGM maintain their own public lists.

Funding is usually by bank transfer, with local bank transfer, card and international wire also common. The route you choose affects how quickly the money appears and what evidence you hold if you need to query it. Keep the transfer confirmation from your banking app; it is the document you will be asked for first.

Before committing capital, log in to the platform's client area and read the funding page, the withdrawal terms and the contract specifications in one sitting. None of those pages is exciting, and all three answer questions that are far harder to resolve once a position is open.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The brand will not be on the register; the legal entity in the footer should be.

A broker's funding page and your bank app are the only reliable sources for payment details

Payment instructions are not fixed. Banks and brokers update beneficiary accounts, reference formats and cut-off times without notice. The version you saved last month may already be wrong. Always open the broker's funding page again before each transfer.

Your bank app shows the exact fields it requires, such as IBAN or SWIFT, and whether a reference is mandatory. If you copy details from an old email or a forum post, the payment can be returned or delayed. That leaves your trading account unfunded while the money is in transit.

For UAE residents, local bank transfer is usually the first option listed, with card and international wire as alternatives. Each rail has its own confirmation process. Check the broker's page for which one matches your account currency and bank.

Bank transfer — limits set by your bank and the broker

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Look at the app and the broker's funding page before you send anything, and keep paying in and taking out on one account.

The name on your bank account must match the name on your trading account

Third-party payments are a common failure point. If you fund a trading account from a bank account held by a spouse, friend or employer, the broker will likely reject the deposit. The money is returned, often minus bank charges, and the delay can last days.

This rule applies to withdrawals too. The broker will only send funds back to a bank account in your own name. If you used a card, the refund may go to that card. Mixing payment methods can slow the process.

Before you transfer, confirm that the account holder name on your bank statement is identical to the name on your trading account. If you use a joint account, check the broker's funding page for whether it is accepted. Do not assume.

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - Ejari or utility bill; requirements differ per firm. Brokers publish what they accept on the page where the account is opened.

A withdrawal request is not complete until the money reaches your bank account

Many traders treat a withdrawal as done once the broker marks it as processed. It is not. The funds still have to travel through the banking system, and that leg is outside the broker's control. Local transfers may clear same day, while international wires can take several business days.

Keep the withdrawal reference number and the broker's confirmation. If the money does not arrive, your bank will ask for these details. Without them, tracing the payment becomes slow and uncertain.

Plan withdrawals around your need for the cash. Do not initiate a withdrawal on a Friday afternoon in the UAE and expect it before the weekend. Bank cut-off times and public holidays affect when the transfer is actually sent.

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.

Check the CMA register before you rely on a firm's UAE presence

A firm may have a UAE office, a local phone number and a website in Arabic, but that does not mean it holds a licence from the Capital Market Authority. The CMA publishes a register of licensed companies at uaecma.gov.ae. That register is the starting point, not the firm's marketing material.

If a firm is not on the register, it may still be regulated elsewhere. That matters because your recourse depends on which regulator supervises the entity you actually contracted with. A passporting arrangement or a group structure can leave you dealing with an offshore entity.

Before funding, find the legal entity name on your account agreement and check it against the CMA register. If it does not appear, ask the firm to explain which regulator covers your account. Do not accept a verbal assurance. Get it in writing.

A fixed monthly return, promised in advanceAsk which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the CMA register of licensed companies.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchersCheck the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
