MT4 vs MT5 vs cTrader vs broker-built platforms

MT4 suits forex and EAs, MT5 adds more markets and tools, cTrader favours order-book transparency, and broker-built platforms vary most.

There are four categories of platform; here is what each does best in practice.

The short answer depends on what you trade and how you place orders

MT4 remains the default for spot forex and automated strategies, MT5 covers more asset classes and timeframes, cTrader appeals to traders who want depth-of-market visibility, and broker-built platforms range from basic apps to full desktop terminals. The right choice follows your order style, your need for automation and how often you trade around the London and New York sessions. The platform is only half the decision: the entity behind it determines who handles a complaint.

MetaTrader 5The newer build; more order types and timeframesMetaQuotes

A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. The licence question is answered on the register, not in the app store.

Where the four platforms actually differ for a UAE-based account

MT4 is a forex-first terminal. Its charting, indicator set and Expert Advisor ecosystem are mature, and most retail forex brokers still support it. MT5 is a newer architecture: more timeframes, an economic calendar, a strategy tester that handles more instruments, and native support for exchange-traded markets alongside forex. If your trading is purely currency pairs with a familiar EA, MT4 is rarely a handicap; if you want broader coverage in one terminal, MT5 is the more natural fit.

cTrader is built around transparent order handling. Level II pricing and detailed order types are central to the interface, which suits traders who watch liquidity rather than only price. Broker-built platforms are the widest category: some are mobile-only, some replicate MT4 features, and some connect directly to the broker's own execution. Their quality varies more than the three third-party names, so test the demo before funding.

Session timing matters in the UAE because the local day straddles Asia and Europe. Sydney runs 01:00 to 10:00 GST, Tokyo 04:00 to 13:00 GST, London 12:00 to 21:00 GST and New York 16:00 to 01:00 GST. The London and New York overlap, 16:00 to 21:00 GST, is the busiest window and the one most day traders plan around.

Regulation changes who you complain to, not which platform you pick

Three regimes coexist in the UAE: the Capital Market Authority onshore, the DFSA in the DIFC and the FSRA in the ADGM. A broker's licence says which one applies, and that changes who handles a complaint if something goes wrong. Before you download a terminal, check the entity name on the CMA register of licensed companies at uaecma.gov.ae and confirm it matches the firm you are actually contracting with.

Platform choice and regulatory status are separate questions. A familiar terminal does not tell you which regime you are under, and a well-regulated entity does not guarantee a platform suits your style. Treat them as two checks: one on the software, one on the paperwork.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. The brand will not be on the register; the legal entity in the footer should be.

Funding, timezone and the practical checks before you commit

Bank transfer is the main payment rail for UAE accounts, alongside local bank transfer, card and international wire. The speed and any charges sit with your bank and the broker, not the platform, so confirm them on the broker's funding page and inside your bank's transfer app rather than assuming. A platform that looks identical to another can sit behind very different payment handling.

Because the UAE runs on GST, UTC+4, your platform's server time may not match your local clock. Check how the broker labels daily candles and session boundaries before you rely on a strategy timed to London or New York. If you trade the 16:00 to 21:00 GST overlap, that offset is the first thing to verify.

Run the demo on your own connection, at your own trading hours, for long enough to test order entry and chart behaviour under load. Then confirm the licensing entity and the funding route. Those three checks settle most of the MT4 versus MT5 versus cTrader question for a UAE-based account.

Hours are given for the clocks currently in force: London stays on GMT until 28 March, and New York stays on EDT until 1 November. The UAE does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.

Platform choice is settled before the first deposit, not after it

The order of operations matters more than the comparison itself. Decide the platform, then confirm the broker offering it accepts UAE residents and settles through a UAE bank account. Reversing that sequence leads to opening an account, funding it, and only then discovering the platform you wanted is not on the menu.

Platforms are tied to brokers, not chosen freely. A broker may run MT4, MT5, cTrader or its own build, and some run only one. The comparison is therefore between broker-platform pairs, not between four standalone products. Treat the pairing as the unit of decision.

Before funding anything, confirm the platform is available on the account type you will actually open. Demo access and live access can differ, and a platform shown on the website may sit behind a different account category. Ask the broker directly, in writing, which platform your chosen account supports.

The funding rails, and who sets their limits

Card
Card payment — limits set by your card issuer and the broker
International wire
Bank transfer — limits set by your bank and the broker

Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Look at the app and the broker's funding page before you send anything, and keep paying in and taking out on one account.

Installation on a UAE connection is a step people skip until it fails

Desktop terminals are downloaded from the broker, not from an app store, and the download source matters. Use the link inside the broker's own client area rather than a search result. Copies from elsewhere can be modified, and a modified terminal is a credential risk before it is a trading risk.

Mobile access behaves differently. MT4 and MT5 have separate mobile applications, and installing the wrong one leaves you unable to log in to the correct server. cTrader and broker-built platforms often run through a browser or a single branded application, which reduces confusion but moves the security question to the browser session.

Network conditions in the UAE are generally reliable, but a dropped connection during an open position is a real failure mode. Know in advance how each platform handles reconnection and whether orders rest on the server or on your device. Server-side orders survive a disconnect. Device-side tools do not.

Account opening: the documents

Who you are

Brokers usually also ask for proof of address - Ejari or utility bill; requirements differ per firm. Brokers publish what they accept on the page where the account is opened.

Automation and custom indicators do not move between platforms

Expert Advisors written for MT4 do not run on MT5, and MT5 uses a different language for its own automation. cTrader uses another framework again. A trader arriving with existing code faces a rewrite, not a copy and paste. This is a practical constraint that outweighs most interface preferences.

Custom indicators carry the same limitation. Files compiled for one terminal will not load in another, and broker-built platforms frequently offer no third-party automation at all. If your method depends on specific tools, the platform decision is already made for you by whatever supports them.

Check this before opening an account rather than after. Ask the broker whether the platform supports automated strategies on your account type, and whether any restrictions apply. Some brokers permit automation on some account categories and not others, and the answer is published in their own documentation.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The conversion your broker applies sits some way from this number, and the gap is yours to pay.

A platform does not determine who handles your complaint

Traders often assume the platform brand carries regulatory weight. It does not. MT4, MT5 and cTrader are software products used by many firms. The entity you hold an account with is the broker, and that is the entity whose conduct can be raised with a regulator.

Under the UAE framework, the Capital Market Authority publishes a register of licensed companies at uaecma.gov.ae. Checking whether your broker appears there is a separate exercise from choosing a platform, and it should be completed first. A familiar terminal tells you nothing about the firm behind it.

Keep the distinction clear when something goes wrong. A platform glitch is a support ticket to the broker. A dispute about order execution, funds or treatment is a matter between you and the licensed entity, and the regulator's register is where you confirm who that entity is.

What should slow you down
What you seeWhat to check
A fixed monthly return, promised in advanceAsk which licence permits it, then look the firm up on the CMA register of licensed companies.
A deposit asked for in gift cards or vouchersCheck the broker's own funding page: firms list bank, card and wallet rails, not vouchers.
Someone offering to trade the account for youManaging money for a client is a separate permission. The register says whether a firm holds it.
A withdrawal released only after a new paymentRead the withdrawal terms you agreed to. When a payout occurs, any fee invented then is not in them.

None of this is a judgement about any firm. Each line is a check you can run yourself, starting at uaecma.gov.ae.

Funding through a UAE bank account exposes mismatches early

Bank transfer is the main rail for UAE accounts, with local transfer, card and international wire also used. The account name on the transfer must match the trading account holder. A mismatch triggers compliance review, and the funds can sit in limbo while it is resolved.

Currency is the second mismatch to watch. The platform may display one base currency while your bank account holds AED. Conversion happens somewhere in the chain, and where it happens determines what you actually receive. The broker's own funding page states which currencies and methods it accepts.

Withdrawal is the step that reveals problems. Some brokers require funds to return by the same method used to deposit, which can slow access if the original method has since changed. Confirm the withdrawal route before depositing, not when you need the money.
